The latest prototypes for the US Marine Corps' (USMC's) Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) have completed a reliability growth test as the contractor and some politicians in Congress work to save the programme. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and USMC leadership have recommended cancelling the EFV programme, saying that although more than USD3 billion has been spent to develop the amphibious vehicle, it is expected to cost another USD 12 billion to buy EFVs and therefore the programme is "simply not affordable".
