France and Russia signed a co-operation pact on 25 January covering the construction of Mistral amphibious assault vessels for the Russian Navy, representing the first direct sale of military equipment to Moscow by a NATO nation. The accord was signed by French Defence Minister Alain JuppS and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin at the STX shipyard in St Nazaire in the presence of French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The shipyard will build two of the 20,000-ton Batiment de Projection et de Commandement (BPC) vessels, with French warship constructor DCNS acting as prime contractor.
