The commandant of the US Marine Corps (USMC) has outlined plans to reduce the overall size and weight of his force in order to save money and become more expeditionary. General James Amos stated in a 8 February speech that he would focus on building capabilities and a structure that support "a middleweight force" able to rapidly respond to crises across the world. In 2015 the USMC is expected to begin reducing its overall size by 15,000 to 20,000 marines, which would take the corps to between 182,000 and 187,000 personnel. However, Gen Amos said he is still keen to increase marine cyber forces by 67 per cent and the USMC Special Operations Command by 44 per cent while keeping the USMC's reserve force structure at current levels.
