The first prototype of India's indigenously designed Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) is expected to be complete by 2012 before undertaking its first test-flight a year later. "The LUH design has been frozen and various technical, structural, engineering and component features are being worked out at present before the first technology demonstrator [TD-1] rolls out in 12 to 14 months, followed by its maiden flight in 2013," K M Bhat of the LUH project management cell at the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore told Jane's at Aero India 2011. With a 6,500-metre operational ceiling, the proposed 187 LUHs for the Army Aviation Corps (AAC) and Indian Air Force (IAF) form part of the long-delayed requirement for 384 LUHs to replace India's fleet of obsolete Chetaks (Aerospatiale SA 316 Alouette Ills) and Cheetahs (Aerospatiale SA-315B Lamas) built under licence by HAL.
