Discussions about the United Arab Emirates' (UAE's) purchase of Lockheed Martin's Terminal High-Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) missile defence system are progressing, with an announcement expected in "the near future", it emerged at IDEX. Speaking on 21 February in Abu Dhabi, Major General Obeid al Ketbi acknowledged mounting speculation that the deal, first estimated at USD7 billion, was close to conclusion. However, he insisted that negotiations were not finalised, and added: "In the near future, [we expect] to reach a final agreement." The UAE would be the first export customer for the system.
