The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is requesting a major package of US military equipment, including an advanced missile defence system, in line with a stated US policy seeking to assist regional allies to counter the military influence of Iran in the Middle East. The administration of President George W Bush announced in 2007 plans for major military sales to Saudi Arabia and other members of the Gulf Co-operation Council - including the more advanced air defence equipment for the UAE - to respond to a perceived threat from Iran. Tehran has warned it will retaliate and will close the Strait of Hormuz should there be any attack against its nuclear facilities. In a 10 September congressional notification, the US Defense Security Co-operation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of a proposed sale of helicopters, missiles and air-defence systems. Most significantly, the UAE requested the sale of Terminal High-Altitude Air-Defense (THAAD) fire units: a transaction with a potential value USD7 billion.
