The Brazilian government has confirmed that the air force's F-X2 fighter procurement programme is to be postponed as it tackles the country's economic problems. President Dilma Rousseff had earlier alluded to a postponement of the programme, but an announcement on 22 February by Defence Minister Nelson Jobim marks the first official confirmation of the decision. It is not clear when the competition will proceed, but Jobin said that, in view of the need to control the country's growing inflation and the defence budget cuts recently announced, it will not take place during Fiscal Year 2011.
