Nearly USD4 billion in contracts were announced by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over the four days of the biennial IDEX defence exhibition in Abu Dhabi, which closed on 25 February under a cloud of unease about the protests destabilising governments across the region. The majority of the contracts were signed with local UAE firms in a clear boost to the indigenous industry, which has made considerable progress in signing joint ventures and partnerships but for the most part has yet to fully capitalise on indigenous production of equipment or materiel. Among the largest deals announced was a USD550 million contract for Emiraje Systems to implement C4I systems.
