Japan's defence budget for 2011 -already at an 18-year low - could drop further due to the costs associated with rebuilding parts of its northeast after the 11 March earthquake and tsunami, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has told Jane's. The Cabinet Office said on 23 March that the cost of rebuilding facilities and infrastructure in the areas hit by the disaster could reach at least JPY25 trillion (USD309 billion) over the next three years.
