South Korean officials revealed this month that the North Korean navy has developed and has been operating a small number of new coastal submarines (SSCs) for several years. The new submarine is based on the older Sang-O class-SSC, which entered service around 1991. Work on the new design, possibly identified as the Sang-O II (or K-300) class, probably began during the late 1990s, with production initiated by the mid-2000s.
