Spending overran in more than half of major US defence procurement programmes in 2010, according to the US Government Accountability Office (GAO). Expenditure on major Department of Defense (DoD) programmes (excluding that for the Ballistic Missile Defense system) had hit USD1.68 trillion by Fiscal Year 2010, representing a cost growth of USD135 billion, or 9 per cent in the past two years.
