Yemen has diverted United States (US)-trained and equipped counter-terrorism forces into ongoing street battles in the capital against rebellious tribal forces, Yemeni government and military officials confirmed on 2 June. While US officials previously warned Yemen President AH Abdullah Saleh it would be illegal to use counter-terrorism aid from Washington against internal dissidents, there was no immediate public comment from the US on the announcement.
