Bae Systems has denied that it will target Canadian shipbuilding contracts and will instead maintain attention on domestic land vehicle programmes. Following recent reports that BAE Systems may seek Canadian naval contracts, a spokesman for the company told Jane's on 6 June that it was not engaged in discussions with the Canadian government regarding work in the sector. "Land is our focus," he said. "Our position is that the Canadian shipbuilding process [and] strategy is for the Canadian government to decide." Canadian Defence Minister Peter MacKay has previously said that shipbuilding competitions will only be open to Canadian firms.
