The Israel Defence Force (IDF) is procuring riot gear and developing new crowd control techniques in response to mounting protests along its northern border with Syria and in anticipation of September's unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood. The programme is being overseen by Brigadier General Miki Edelstein, commander of the IDF's Infantry Corps, and has received a special budget allocation for new technology and equipment. Gen Edelstein is also developing a new operational doctrine for how commanders and soldiers should control civilian demonstrations.
