Boeing is to consider entering an entirely new aircraft design into the US Air Force's (USAF's) T-X trainer competition, Darryl Davis, President of the company's Phantom Works, told reporters on 7 June. The USAF is currently in the midst of an analysis of alternatives (AoA) process as it looks to replace up to 350 of its 1960s-era Northrop T-38 Talon jet trainer aircraft by 2017. "The air force visited us and other manufacturers in the third quarter of last year," Davis said. "They are currently trying to understand the trade space as they decide whether to go for a derivative aircraft or to go for a clean-sheet design.
