A US congressional committee passed its version of the Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) defence spending bill on 14 June, cutting nearly USD9 billion from President Barack Obama's USD658 billion Pentagon budget request while adding money for tank production and development of a next-generation bomber aircraft. The House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations' legislation includes nearly USD119 billion for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq: an USD842 million increase on the Obama administration's request. The Senate Committee on Appropriations has not yet scheduled action on its version of the defence bill; both versions will have to be reconciled before being delivered the to president for signing. House appropriators raised concerns about the US Army's plans to end production of the Ml Al Abrams main battle tank (MBT) next month and the M1A2SEP variant in two years before restarting a tank line in 2016. It added USD272 million to the Pentagon's request for continued procurement of M1A2SEP tanks in FY12.
