The US Navy has noticed an increase in the reporting of maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea off Africa's west coast, a spokesman confirmed to Jane's on 15 August. The summer bulletin from the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting centre advised there has been a substantial spike in the number of attacks reported off the coasts of Nigeria, Benin, Guinea-Conakry and Cameroon, amounting to 27 for 2011 so far. However, the rise is in spite of the fact that attacks in the vicinity are under-reported because many vessels are laden with illegally obtained petroleum products.
