摘要

Yoshihiko Noda, who on 29 August was elected leader of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and on 30 August became the country's prime minister, is the son of a Japan Self-Defence Forces member and a firm believer in the Japan-US alliance. He is also a cautious critic of China's military expansion and, in the view of South Korea, an apologist for Japan's wartime crimes. Noda, who was finance minister in the government of predecessor prime minister Naoto Kan, faces more immediate domestic issues as Japan tries to recover from the 11 March earthquake and tsunami and the related nuclear crisis. He also needs to rein in a strengthening yen that is harming exports and economic growth in the world's third-largest economy.
