Turkey is forging ahead with plans to build its own fighter aircraft for the first time, the Turkish Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) has announced. International co-operation is expected, with Sweden's Saab and South Korea's Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) having been linked to the project. The SSM said on 23 August that it had signed an initial, two-year contract with Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) for the conceptual development of a national fighter jet under an accord that covers the first development phase of the programme.
