摘要

The issue of solving brownout - the blinding effect of dust and debris that is kicked-up by a helicopter's rotor blades during take-off and landing - has been one that Western militaries in particular have been grappling with for some years. The importance placed in solving this problem is reflected in the number of solutions that have been devised or are under development. While governments and industry have been investing heavily in the development of systems to counter this phenomenon, theirfielding has been a painfully slow process, with only medical evacuation and special mission platforms, such as the CV-22, being equipped as a matter of course with systems such as forward-looking infrared (FLIR) to counter the effects of'brownout'.
