With the threat of having an additional USD500 billion cut from the US defence budget, the competition for funding among the service branches is intense. Consequently Gen Amos has been restructuring the USMC as a cost-effective, middle-weight force that can handle a variety of situations ranging from heavy-duty military deployments to humanitarian and disaster relief operations. Gen Amos described the USMC as "an agile force comfortable operating at the high and low ends of the threat spectrum - larger than special operations, but lighter than conventional army units. We respond quickly, often from the sea, with enough force to carry the day upon arrival."
