摘要

Kenya said on 2 November that it would escalate attacks on key southern Somali towns held by the insurgent Shabab movement, continuing a two-week-old assault that humanitarian agencies say also included an airstrike on a refugee camp. Military spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir said that 10 towns would be targeted in the new aerial offensive including the strategic port city of Kismayo, which remains firmly in the hands of the Al-Qaeda-linked movement. Kismayo is also considered the epicentre of what the UN estimates is more than USD 100 million in annual revenues for the group from port taxes and illegal charcoal and food smuggling, among other activities.
