The top echelons of the South African Defence Department were in turmoil in early November after the surprise resignation of Defence Secretary Mpumi Mpofu and air force chief Lieutenant General Carlo Gagiano.Chief Financial Officer Mzi-wonke Dlabantu is temporarily filling in as defence secretary. However, Gen Gagiano remains in post as his resignation has not been accepted by defence and military veterans minister, Lindiwe Sisulu.Both resignations followed the abrupt cancellation of state-level meetings in Finland due to mechanical failure in chartered aircraft that South African Air Force (SAAF) technicians were unable to repair.
