An Arab League-brokered deal to end seven months of chaos in Syria has all but collapsed with the siege on 7 November of the central city of Horns, which has resulted in dozens of civilian deaths and led the country closer to the brink of civil war.After crackdowns by the armed forces still loyal to the regime of Bashar al-Assad around the country, Horns remains the only major urban centre to have resisted wholesale takeover. Part of the reason, analysts suggest, is that large caches of weapons are stockpiled in the town, which has become the nerve centre for the armed opposition slowly building a defence against the loyalist forces.
