Several naval analysts contacted by Jane's were shocked to hear that the first Flight III destroyer could cost USD1 billion-USD2 billion more than the current Flight IIA ships. The requirement for a more robust power system is thought to be the principal reasonforthe discrepancy between the figures provided by HII and BIW. The latter has experience with 4,160 V systems in building the Zumwalt-class (DDG1000) destroyers, while HH's Ingalls facility has relied on 440 V systems.
