Syria fired a 'Scud-B' ballistic missile on 4 December in a move interpreted by Israel as a warning against any foreign intervention in the country. Calls for the departure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are mounting in an effort to end his nine-month violent crackdown on opposition groups. The UN estimates that more than 3,500 people have been killed since protests erupted in March. Israeli defence officials said that Israel Defence Force (IDF) radars detected the launch of the 'Scud' missile from a mountainous area in northeast Syria a few hundred kilometres from the Israeli-Syrian border. "It could be that Syria was trying to demonstrate its capabilities and project confidence, but this is more of a sign of fear and distress," Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said on 6 December.
