North Korea has raised military tensions in the Yellow Sea (West Sea) in a bid to strengthen its bargaining power ahead of talks with South Korea and the United States, experts have told Jane's.rnOn the morning of 27 January the Korea People's Army (KPA) fired 30 artillery shells into its own waters near the disputed maritime border with the South: the so-called Northern Limit Line (NLL). South Korean forces immediately replied by firing 100 warning shots from Vulcan cannons posted on nearby Baeknyong Island. Despite Seoul's call for an "immediate" halt, Pyongyang fired additional rounds during the afternoon and then again the next day. South Korea refrained from responding. The KPA had declared the region a 'no sail zone' on 26 January and said its artillery activities were part of a military drill.
