Despite the almost twenty-fold cost escalation in the indigenous development of the Tejas, India's light combat aircraft (LCA), since its inception 27 years ago, the aircraft remains several years away from being commissioned into service, the country's parliamentary standing committee on defence has declared.rnThe committee noted that the cost of the programme had now risen to INR 136.30 billion (USD3.02 billion). This includes INR28.39 billion exhausted on futile attempts lasting around two decades to locally design the Kaveri engine; this would replace the General Electric F404-GE-IN20 engine that currently powers the aircraft.
