摘要

Malaysia has backed down from its proposal to form a regional defence industry council due to concerns expressed by neighbours Indonesia and Singapore, Jane's has learnt.rnSpeaking at the Defence Services Asia Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur on 19 April, Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the proposal will be rewritten to focus on "collaboration" rather than on the creation of a formal body.rnMalaysia's initial proposal, which was tabled before the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN - first established 1967 andrnnow encompassing Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) by Zahid in mid-2009, called for regional countries to jointly develop defence equipment under a single body called the ASEAN Security and Defence Industry Council (ASDIC).
