The US Air Force (USAF) is set to purchase a light strike and reconnaissance aircraft to assist the Afghan National Army Air Corps (ANAAC) and other developing air forces, but will no longer develop an organic light attack and armed reconnaissance (LAAR) capability. USAF Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz said on 6 May that the service will procure 15 light attack aircraft in Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12), which differs from USAF's stated intention of 2009 to purchase 100 light attack aircraft as part of a new counterinsur-gency (COIN) unit.
