The US Army has awarded Northrop Grumman a USD517 million development contract to build up to three hybrid airships to act as 'unblinking eye' surveillance platforms in Afghanistan, the company announced on 14 June.rnUnder the terms of the contract, which was awarded by the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command (USASMDC/ ARSTRAT), Northrop Grumman will initially design, develop and test a single long-duration hybrid airship (designated HAV304)rnwithin an 18-month time period, with the option to build two more at a later date.
