The Indian Army is acquiring 12 locally designed Akash surface-to-air missile (SAM) batteries for an estimated IN125 billion (USD2.77 billion) to replace ageing Soviet SA-6 Kvadrat systems in three of its air-defence (AD) regiments.rnAt its 8 June meeting the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), headed by Indian Defence Minister A K Antony, approved the induction of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)-designed Akash into the army - two years after it had rejected the missile system because of its operational shortcomings.
