The US Army announced on 23 June that it has started shipping new M855A1 Enhanced Performance Rounds (EPRs) to troops in Afghanistan for use in the next few months.rnOften referred to as 'green ammo', the EPR is a 5.56 mm cartridge intended to replace the current M855 5.56 mm cartridge that has been in use with the US military since the 1980s.rnThe M855A1 round contains "an environmentally friendlyrnprojectile that eliminates up to 2,000 tons of lead from the manufacturing process each year", the army said in a statement. This ammunition programme was previously known as the Lead Free Slug (LFS). Several other enhancements have been made to the 5.56 mm cartridge for the A1 model.
