The Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) plans to increase the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) submarine fleet to more than 20 from the current 16: a move that is apparently aimed at countering China's growing naval power.rn"We are considering boosting the JMSDF submarine fleet as we formulate the new National Defense Program Guidelines (NDPG) by year-end," an MoD spokesperson said on 21 October. The NDPG to be compiled in December will define the country's basic security policy for the next 10 years.
