For the majority of the world's armed forces - and the defence industries that support them - 2010 was the year in which the effects of the global financial crisis finally came home to roost. High-minded procurement projects were either cancelled or delayed; plans for modernisation were put on hold. For many armed forces this means soldiering on with ageing platforms and having to accept defence budgets that may not even maintain current inventories.
