The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) have unexpectedly found themselves at the heart of a Middle Eastern power play pitting the United States against Russia and Iran. The US, which in the past two years has taken the lead in upgrading the LAF, was upstaged in December when Russia unexpectedly announced that it was willing to give Lebanon 10 MiG-29 'Fulcrum' fourth-generation fighters with promises of more armaments to follow. This followed an agreement signed between Lebanon and Iran in November according to which Iran will supply the LAF with weapons and other defence equipment over the next five years.
