Algerian security forces shot and killed three would-be suicide bombers on a main thoroughfare between the hamlet of Tadmait and Tizi Ouzou, the provincial capital of the Kabylie region, on 6 January, a Jane's correspondent witnessed. The foiling of another suicide attack in the restive area east of the capital Algiers came in a week of moderate success for security forces in rooting out the Islamic insurgents who have adopted the name Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in their bid to destabilise North Africa. Security agencies on 5 January broke up a network that specialised in the manufacture of weapons and bombs, arresting three people and seizing 38 kg of explosive materials, according to published reports.
