Declaring their mission "accomplished", Ethiopia has begun withdrawing its forces from Somalia, leaving a security vacuum that could expand with the threatened departure of Burun-dian and Ugandan soldiers should their African Union (AU) mission fail to be reinforced. In a statement released by its foreign ministry on 4 January, Ethiopia stated that its armed forces had reached "the final phase of [their withdrawal] having accomplished [their] mission with success" and were handing over security to AU troops and the Somali National Army.
