An Indian Navy (IN) Type 877 'Kilo'-class submarine that has been undergoing a mid-life upgrade (MLU) since 2004 is now unlikely to rejoin the fleet before 2014-15, IN officials have said. The IN officials said on 13 January that the retrofit of INS Sind-hukirti - which includes extensive hull repair and upgrades to weapon systems and electronic, sonar and communication equipment - was being undertaken at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) at Vishka-patnam, eastern India, in order to augment local capability in submarine upgrades. Work was originally due to be completed in 2010.
