Saab and Selex Galileo are set to develop a new active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar for the next-generation JAS 39 Gripen NG fighter aircraft. On 25 March the two companies announced an agreement, which was signed the previous week, that sets out their plan for a future joint programme in a move that heralds an end to Saab's co-operation with Thales in AESA development. Thales was to provide an active antenna for radar trials with Saab's Gripen Demo aircraft, which is the technology testbed forthe production Gripen NG. Relations with Thales became unworkable once Saab rival Dassault Aviation increased its ownership of Thales by acquiring the 20.9 per cent shareholding previously held by Alcatel-Lucent. Thales' continuing involvement with the Gripen Demo is now under review. A separate flight-test and development effort will be run for Gripen's Selex Galileo AESA programme.
