NATO forces in Afghanistan concluded two major offensive operations in late July, having achieved their objective of occupying large areas of Taliban-controlled territory along the Helmand River valley in time for the country's 20 August elections. The British government declared the UK-led Operation 'Panther's Claw' a success on 27 July, three days after the US Marine Corps' Task Force (TF) Leatherneck announced that the first phase of Operation 'Strike of the Sword' had also come to a successful conclusion.
