Substantial political pressure backed by some USD50 million in equipment and technical assistance have resulted in a vigorous effort by Egypt to dismantle the tunnels used by Hamas and other radical Palestinian groups to smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip.rnThe tunnels have been a lifeline for Gaza residents due to the Israeli blockades but havernassumed a more sinister purpose for Hamas, which has smuggled a substantive armoury of small arms, light weapons, rockets and missiles through them.
