The US Air Force (USAF) has officially confirmed the existence of "a stealthy unmanned aircraft system [UAS] to provide reconnaissance and surveillance support to forward deployed combat forces".rnIn a statement released on 4 December, the USAF said that the RQ-170, which is being developed by Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs (ADP), "aligns with Secretary of Defense Robert M Gates' request for increased intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance [ISR] support to the combatant commanders and [USAF] Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz's vision for an increased USAF reliance on unmanned aircraft".rnThe air force statement coincides with a flurry of reports of an unidentified, flying-wing-type unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) supposedly operating out of Kandahar Air Base in southern Afghanistan, although it is not clear if these sightings are of the RQ-170.
