A K Anthony, the Indian defence minister, visited Tajikistan on 18 January to ensure that plans to upgrade India's only overseas base proceed in the face of Russian opposition.rnIn a meeting with his Tajik counterpart, Colonel-General Khairullaev Sherali, Anthony is understood to have pressed the case for stationing jet fighters, believed to be MiG-29s, at the base at Ayni, near the Tajik capital, Dushanbe.rnReports of Russian opposition to India's plans - which has arisen despite Moscow's original Involvement in the discussions- suggested that the future of the Ayni base might now be under threat. India has been extending the runway and hangars at the base inrnpreparation for the MiGs'arrival.
