The White House has announced a package of export control reforms following demands from United States defence industry groups in March 2007 to improve the process.rnThe US Department of State said the purpose of the new Export Control Directive, announced on 22 January, is to spur reforms that will enable the US government "to respond more expeditiously to the military equipment needs of ourfriends, allies... and particularly our coalition partners". This announcement was welcomed by key players inrnthe US defence industry, which has long voiced concerns thatthe White House has an antiquated export control process that errs too much on the side of delaying or denying export control licences.rn"The administration is updating a system that has not kept pace with globalisation and rapid technological changes," said John Engler, president of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). "This has been atop trade priorityfor MAM overthe last year."
