On 1 May the Turkish Air Force mounted its second attack in seven days on targets of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. According to the Iraqi Kurdish Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (IKPU), around 33 Turkish F-16 fighters took off from the Diyarba-kir 2nd Air Force Command 8th Jet base and bombed PKK targets in Kurtek and Kalatukan areas in the Qandil mountains. The Turkish General Staff (TGS) confirmed the incursion on 2 May in a statement on its website, saying "PKK targets were hit in comprehensive and effective air-strikes". Seven days before, 43 Turkish F-16s and F-4 fighter aircraft launched airstrikes on PKK targets in northern Iraq on 25 and 26 April. Supported by ground-based support units, the aircraft hit targets in the Zap, Avashin-Basyan and Hakurk regions, killing dozens of insurgents, according to the statement on the TGS website on 29 April.
