摘要

In the first visit from a top Gulf diplomat since the US-led occupation began in 2003, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced plans on 5 June to despatch an ambassador to Iraq in coming weeks. With similar announcements following from Bahrain and Jordan, the move signalled the strongest regional support yet of the fledgling government in Baghdad by Iraq's Sunni Arab neighbours and an implicit endorsement of the hard-won security improvements on the ground. There has been no Arab ambassador posted to Iraq since 2005, when Egypt's envoy was kidnapped and murdered. Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan told a press conference in Baghdad the naming of an ambassador would come "in the next few days". "We view Iraq as an important partner in the region and we aspire to [Baghdad] being an important partner of the GCC [Gulf Co-operation Council]," the UAE news agency WAM quoted him as saying.
