Turkey has assured Washington it has not passed to Iran any intelligence it received to conduct operations against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) based in northern Iraq. US concerns followed comments made by Turkish Land Forces Commander General Ilker Basbug to reporters on 5 June that Turkey has been engaged in intelligence co-operation with Iran against the PKK. "Turkey has been doing its best to control its borders with Iraq... [Turkey's] second priority is the borders with Iran," he said. "We have been conducting with Iran simultaneous and co-ordinated operations against the terrorists: the [Iranians] on their soil and us on our soil." The Iranian military has been engaged in operations against the Iraq-based Kurdish nationalist Partiya Jiyana Azad a Kurdistane (Party of Free Life of Kurdistan, PJAK): an off-shoot of the PKK. Washington feared this co-operation may have included sharing highly valuable real-time intelligence supplied by the US to Turkey since December. "The US supplies Turkey with intelligence information on the PKK not for Iran but for northern Iraq," said a Western diplomatic source in Ankara. However, Turkish diplomatic sources told Jane's thatthe Turkish Foreign Ministry has assured Washington that it has not passed any on.
