US Navy Vice Admiral William Gortney assumed command of the US Fifth Fleet on 5 July, vowing to build on and enhance existing co-operation with regional partners to ensure the stability and security of maritime operations. Vice Adm Gortney relieved the now-retired Vice Admiral Kevin Cosgriff of command of the Bahrain-based fleet, which works with some 20 countries as part of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) in a zone covering 16.8 million km~2 that stretches from the Strait of Hor-muz to the Suez Canal via the Indian Ocean. "The continued presence of coalition forces guarantees maritime security of those who depend on free use of the seas," said Vice Adm Cosgriff at the handover ceremony on 5 July, according to a transcript of the proceedings released by the Fifth Fleet. "From security arises stability, which enhances trade, promotes economic vitality and increases regional and global prosperity," he said.
