The US Navy (USN) is scaling back plans to build the Zumwalt-class (DDG 1000) destroyer, effectively ending the programme at two vessels. Lieutenant Clayton Doss, a navy spokesman, confirmed on 24 July the service would end the DDG 1000 programme after completion of the first two ships. When DDG 1000 was first conceived, the service had anticipated building as many as 32 of the advanced destroyers; the proposed buy was eventually trimmed to seven hulls. Two DDG 1000s are currently under contract: the first will be built by General Dynamics Bath Iron Works (BIW) in Bath, Maine; a second will be built at Northrop Grumman's Ingalls yard in Pasca-goula, Mississippi.
